Turn Out The Lights The (Ice Fishing) Party’s Over

Ok, so perhaps this is a bit late as ice fishing has been over in most part of North America for a while, but you get my point. If you have a portable ice fishing hut now is the time to make sure that it is still in great condition for next season. Mice are notorious for chewing holes in the fabric of these shelters, so make sure to store it up off the ground somewhere. It is possible for them to find a way in while hanging from the ceiling or up in the rafters, but is less likely if you do this than leave on the floor of your garage. Plus, it gives you back some usable room in your already cramped garage.
On to your ice fishing clothing. While I am willing to store much of my gear out in the garage, my clothing is another story. I have a nice spot in my basement for these to reside for the offseason. Especially my ice fishing gloves, which are about the most unique thing to ice fishing that I don't want to ruin. Find a dry place to store them, prefer them to be out of the sunlight if at all possible and a reasonably consistent temperature.
Now, on to our ice fishing lures. You made sure to buy all those popular ice fishing jigs that everyone was raging on and on about, right? Well, let's make sure they are rarin' to go next winter when you hit the ice. Check to make sure that no condensation or water is in your tackle box. This will invariably lead to rusty and worthless lures. If they aren't dry, I would dry them as best you can with a towel and leave open somewhere dry for a couple of days. Then put them away. I think the garage has been fine with my lures, but in the house is good also. Just make sure that they are out of the way from getting wet and again, out of sunlight.
I think that just about wraps it up. Just remember that the more that you do now to ensure that your ice fishing gear is in good condition, the less headache you will come upon next winter when heading back out to ice fish.
