When it comes to the ice auger perhaps no part has grown faster and better than the electric ice augers of late. The hand ice auger has been a staple of ice fishing gear for quite some time. And once people wanted to be able to punch more holes through thicker ice the logical progression was with the gas ice auger which has been such a popular piece of ice fishing equipment the past few decades. Inherent in the way that a gas auger works is that it requires you to purchase gas and deal with the exhaust from running the unit. If you are outside and running and gunning this isn’t that big of an issue (although your clothes will reek of this smell after a day of ice fishing), but if you are in a permanent ice house, this is a completely different story.
This is where an electric ice auger truly shines. Able to cut through thick ice with relative ease while not fumigating the entire house, the electric auger has come a long way. This isn’t to say that they are the equivalent of a gas ice auger. Gas augers still have more power and longer lasting power. In addition, a simple addition of gas will allow them to run all day long. With an electric auger you are forced to either have a way to charge them (like with a car battery or similar) or have a separate battery pack.
