When it comes to the world of men and their past times it is normally generally accepted that bigger is better. And in many cases it is. Who doesn’t like fishing out of that great 10” hole that your buddy cuts for you with his enormous gas ice auger? But there are times when a smaller ice auger is in order and actually preferable. It is these times that a 6 inch ice auger and especially a 4 inch ice auger really shine.
So When Is The Best Time To Use A 4 Inch Auger?
The best time to use a small ice auger is when you are targeting small fish. The diameter of an auger has a huge impact on how hard it is to cut through the ice. For this reason a hand ice auger is all you would need to cut those small holes when you are ice fishing crappie or other small fish like sunfish and perch. Dave Genz has been known to say that show him a lake where you need bigger than a 6 inch auger to catch panfish and he’ll bring the bait! Even for those pigs you can often get by with a small hole such as one that a 4” auger cuts. And your muscles will thank you as it is quite a lot easier to cut them.
Use a 4 inch auger to cut your transducer hole for your flasher
Ice fishing without an ice fishing flasher is akin to fishing blind, so I am sure you would never leave home without one. That said, when you are pulling a fish up your hole the line always gets wrapped up with the transducer and can lead to missed fish. If you cut a second hole right next to the hole you are fishing with a small auger you can still get all the benefits of your Vexilar fish finders, but don’t have to worry about the ducer giving you problems. This can be especially helpful when ice fishing pike or ice fishing walleye.
What brand auger should I buy
This is often a fight similar to Chevy vs Ford, so I won’t belabor this point too far, but it has been my experience that the Nils Master ice augers are the most superior cutting auger on the market. If you can get your hand on a 4” auger from them you can cut through a lot of ice in a short period of time. That said, the Strikemaster Lazer 4 inch ice auger is a nice buy as well.
