The Nitty Gritty of Venom Ice Fishing Bobbers

The true test of ice fishing equipment is when you get on the ice and try it under real world conditions.  I must say that I am duly impressed with the system and product.  The first things that every great ice fishing bobber must have is the ability to function in the cold and not have problems with icing up.  The hole where you put the line in this bobber is sufficient to ensure that it won't get iced up.  Even more important in my eyes is that the place where this mechanism is stopped takes place below the water surface to avoid the cold temperatures.  This leads to nothing but problems while out ice fishing panfish or any other species.  The Venom flew by here as well.  As for their claim that you can adjust the buoyancy to varying weights of lures, once again I must say that I am impressed.  I used jigs of varying weights from a 1/16 ounce Lindy Frostee Jigging Spoon to a 1/4 ounce Genz Bug and was able to adjust the float system with relative ease and find that neutrally buoyant point that is so critical in getting those finicky fish to bite.  I was especially impressed with the ability to get down to the 1/16 ounce weight.  I have had such a hard time finding a good bobber for this over the years and have gone away from jigs this small as a result.

The true test for any piece of fishing tackle is whether it works with the fish of course!  Again, the neutrally buoyant float allowed for no resistance when I was out ice fishing crappie and they took it down without dropping the minnow.  This is a common problem when fishing for winter crappie, they can really be finicky.

Venom Ice Fishing Bobber Prices

If there is one detractor to this bobber system it likely has to be the price.  While you can go and buy ice buster bobbers for around a dollar a piece, the Venom is going to set you back $5 a piece (includes all the necessary components for many different weights of jigs and so forth).  If it is up to me I say it is worth it, but you have to make that decision for yourself.

Use a  4 inch auger to cut your transducer hole for your flasher

Ice fishing without an ice fishing flasher is akin to fishing blind, so I am sure you would never leave home without one.  That said, when you are pulling a fish up your hole the line always gets wrapped up with the transducer and can lead to missed fish.  If you cut a second hole right next to the hole you are fishing with a small auger you can still get all the benefits of your Vexilar fish finders, but don’t have to worry about the ducer giving you problems.  This can be especially helpful when ice fishing pike or ice fishing walleye.

What brand auger should I buy

This is often a fight similar to Chevy vs Ford, so I won’t belabor this point too far, but it has been my experience that the Nils Master ice augers are the most superior cutting auger on the market.  If you can get your hand on a 4” auger from them you can cut through a lot of ice in a short period of time.  That said, the Strikemaster Lazer 4 inch ice auger is a nice buy as well.

The most common place that I go when trying to find a used Vexilar is Ebay.  There is always a wide array of models available, the prices are generally pretty good, and with Paypal you have recourse to get your money back should something be amiss.  Luckily I have not had to use the Paypal fraud protection in my experience, but rest assured it is very friendly to buyers.  When you are looking for a used Vexilar for sale, remember that you want to get a unit that is in good shape and will last for years.  Thankfully Vexilar makes a great product that stands the test of time.  On top of that there seems to be a never ending supply of people that try the ice fishing game and enjoy it for a year and then decide that they don’t have the drive to keep it going.  This is where you come in to get a deal on the flasher.  Look for a relatively newer unit and one that hasn’t been used many times.  Once you have the unit it may be in your best interest to buy a new Vexilar battery.  The most common problems with Vexilars is the batteries won’t charge fully after a while and then units won’t function correctly.

Craigslist is a great place to find used stuff to add to your ice fishing arsenal (in addition to several other things around the home).  My biggest problem with these transactions is that you need to go and meet the person to make the exchange (have had MANY problems with making sure that people meet me after setting up a time and place to meet) as well as there being no recourse should the item purchased not work after getting it home.

Sharp blades are a must when it comes to punching holes through the ice.

When it comes time to cut those holes in the ice there is no more important piece of ice fishing gear than your auger.  And if you have dull blades you are in for a world of frustration as you are trying to punch all those holes to keep chasing those fish, especially when you are ice fishing crappie.  Let’s be honest, one of the most important tenets of the modern ice angler is the ability to move around to many holes and find active pods of fish in the size you are looking for.  It is common for me to punch 30-50 holes in one trip to ensure I am constantly on top of fish.  Sure once you find the fish you are set, but until that time you are bound by the number of holes you can drop your ice fishing flasher down to find fish and put your best ice fishing jig in front of their face.  This is where sharpening ice auger blades becomes a necessity.

Strikemaster has a great tool that works for sharpening your blades and works very well while you are out and about.

One route that I would suggest is to finding an extra set of ice auger blades for sale for your specific model and bring them with.  Switching out a set of blades usually is a pretty quick job and can really change the landscape on how many holes you can punch.

The problem with sharpening the blades on your own is that you need to have that edge of the blade cut just perfectly or it won’t work correctly.  Trust me as a guy who has used an auger that had sharp blades, but was off kilter because I lost one of the bolts and replaced it with one from my local hardware store.  That hand ice auger just flat out wouldn’t cut a hole until I went to Strikemaster and bought the correct bolt.

And just because you have a power gas ice auger doesn’t mean that you don’t need sharp blades.  Dull blades with a power auger still is a pain, you seem to have to lean on the auger the entire time you are cutting the hole.  And with an electric ice auger you are going to wear that battery charge out much faster than necessary.

One final thing, you can often send in your old dull blades to be sharpened by a pro.  With my Nils ice auger I have used a guy I would strongly recommend for his expedience and quality work (in addition to a square price).  Here is his contact information:
