When you are ice fishing crappie the simple truth is that you need to be able to move around a lot.  Not only will these fish normally be suspended in the water column over deep water, the school moves around a general area throughout the day.  If you want to continue to catch fish you had better be willing to move.  Given that as a backdrop you need to have a ton of holes predrilled to truly have any chance of moving around effectively.  A gas ice auger is almost a necessity.  Sure you could get by with an electric ice auger and do quite well if you are only drilling 40 or so holes, but to make swiss cheese of the ice you need to go the power route.
