Gas Ice Augers

[ ] [ ]

When it comes to utilizing modern ice fishing techniques, perhaps there is nothing more implicit to best embracing it than the gas ice auger. Sure there are several other pieces of ice fishing gear that are imperative to best maximize your time on the ice, but all of it is moot if you aren’t punching many, many holes through the ice. And if you are so inclined and the ice isn’t too thick you might be able to get by with a hand ice fishing auger, but the reality is that in order to truly be on the move to many holes you need to have some sort of powered auger.

The most common and powerful of augers is the gas ice auger. Unless you buy a 4 cycle gas ice auger you need to mix the gas put into these augers with a bit of 2 cycle oil. One key thing to remember about gas ice augers is that due to their small engine size and carburetor jets being relatively small the gas is very important to ensure they run correctly. If the gas you are using is over a couple of weeks old do yourself a favor and go get some fresh gas from the gas station. And if you are starting the auger for the first time of the year, make sure that you have purged the tank of last year’s gas and start anew.
When it comes to brands of gas ice augers there are several top brands to choose from. The most common brands on the ice today are the Strikemaster gas ice auger and the Jiffy gas ice augers. Known for years of solid reliability and superior customer service these brands are a staple of ice fishing equipment everywhere. One of the more prominent brands that is relatively new to the North American market are the Nils gas ice augers. The thing that sets this auger apart (other than the higher price tag!) is the cutting mechanism. With a standard gas ice auger you have a set of blades that are attached to the cutting head. These are relatively thin and work pretty well, but the Nils Master gas auger sports a cutting head that is more like a drill bit. When it comes to cutting ease it is truly in a league all by itself. The drill bit allows for a crazy sharp edge and a truly superior ice auger.
When it comes to choosing a gas ice auger the choices are many, but the thing to consider is that no matter which you choose you will be able to move around and catch more fish while on the ice.
